Possible Complications of Oral Surgery

After dental surgery, it is important that you take very good care of your implant or extraction site. Every type of oral surgery is slightly different and your dentist will likely provide you with specific recommendations. However, after your surgery, there are a few things to be aware of.

Some complications that could arise after a tooth extraction include:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Dry socket
  • Numbness
  • Swelling
  • Lightheadedness
  • Trismus
  • Dead tooth fragments

Prevent these complications from occurring at all by following the advice of our trained dental professionals.

Recommended Care Immediately Following Surgery

First, be sure to constantly bite down on the gauze placed in your mouth to maintain pressure. If the gauze dries out, you can dampen it with water and change it if it becomes soaked with blood. Keep your head elevated, try to reduce your activity level, and rinse your mouth with warm salt water every 1-2 hours starting 48 hours after surgery. Avoid using mouthwash, touching the wounded areas, smoking cigarettes, and eating sharp or hard foods. Be sure to stay hydrated, take your medications as prescribed, and use ice packs to help reduce swelling.

Our Pittsford dentist is here to answer questions or address concerns you may have about caring for your teeth and mouth after surgery. If you have any worries or have started to experience any post-surgery complications, we're available to help you.
